Explanation of the Solidarity Symbol  
for our Share Lent Campaign: HANDCUFFS 

The symbol for this week, handcuffs, represent the arbitrary arrest of people defending human and environmental rights. This often happens in Honduras. There, some communities face a double threat. Powerful companies want to grab their lands to steal their resources. And their own governments support those companies in the name of economic development. Development and Peace’s local partner, Caritas Choluteca, helps the people counter these twin threats. They train and accompany community leaders. They help people advocate for policies and practices that respect human rights and the environment.
